Volunteering at ULink provides the perfect opportunity for students to take action in their world, as global citizens. The Volunteer Association is comprehensive in its scope, and focuses on giving back to the school community and society. It acknowledges that community service is a vital part of a student's portfolio when applying to universities and colleges around the world. It creates these opportunities for ULink students, forming an essential component of global citizenship at our school. Some examples include student volunteers at parent meetings; visiting the elderly at retirement homes; and hosting cultural celebrations that bring the school and community together.

Some recent projects in 2020, include the student life committee; Hainan teaching activities; tropical rain forest maintenance; panda feeding in Chengdu; museum volunteering and Guangzhou metro volunteering. Please read about some of the experiences of our students below.

Additionally, the Eco Club is forming a committee to focus on sustainability at ULink. You can find more information about these developing initiatives, under 'Sustainable Citizenship' on the Global Citizenship page.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

TAYLOR G10, PANDA FEEDING IN CHENGDU

"In the Summer holiday, we went to GuanBa in Chengdu, to visit pandas. in the first three days, we stayed at villager's house and experienced a gorgeous natural scene. We not only went up the high mountains, but also assembled some equipment that observed the behaviour of pandas who live on the mountain. During the final two days, we stayed in Chengdu and visited the famous giant pandas' breeding base. The pandas are really adorable! All in all, this was a wonderful experience, and I am looking forward to another remarkable trip!"

COCO G10, HAINAN TEACHING EXPERIENCE

"Because this was my first time to participate in the volunteer education support activities, I was full of curiosity and anticipation. Our group members were all involved for the first time and had no experience, but they took this event very seriously, with careful consideration. Every time we prepared for the next day's course, we would carefully prepare our topic, especially considering the age group of the children and building their understanding. In the four or five days of teaching, our presentations were generally considered popular to those children. The children were very interested in our lectures, and willing to actively participate in them. During the teaching process, I could also clearly feel the usefulness of being a global citizen…Apparently, we seem to come from many different places, but we can still communicate in different ways and teach each other interesting things. We can also build trust with others, so that we can do something more meaningful together, such as making suggestions for some local problems and helping the children solve some simple problems that can improve the quality of their local education."

HARRIET G12, RAINFOREST PROTECTION

"The Earth needs us to protect it, and once all volunteers gather as families, this will be a formidable power to solve environmental problems. Through my volunteer work, I worked with others and we gathered as families. I think it is empowering to solve environmental problems. I am trying to develop myself and ignore the negative comments of others, and just do what I want to do. I recommend that, if you participate in volunteering, you enjoy the teamwork and stay kind to your group members."

CYRUS G10, CHINA CENSUS

"My community invited me to be a part of China's seventh census work last year. I guided people to fill in the declared family information. This activity is meaningful, because the census helps the government to develop our country and even the world. We do volunteer work as a way to contribute to society. The census volunteer work helps our society to learn more about the living standard of people. I think that we develop competency in correcting unfairness and irrational issues in this way. We also want to take action to create a peaceful and sustainable developing world, starting with our own community."

AMANDA G12, METRO VOLUNTEER

"My volunteer experience made me realise the significance of my contribution to society. If everyone in this society makes a little effort each day and lives with the duty of a global citizen, our world will become a better place. My advice is to believe in your competency to help others, and you can change the world. Take action by helping old people go across the street, showing others the way, or any little things in life. A small action means a lot to the people you help. My days as a metro volunteer have taught me that we all have the potential to create a peaceful society."
