KNOWLEDGE
ULink College offers a range of opportunities for students to engage in the experience and the ethos of global citizenship. Across every discipline area, there are learning activities that help to develop an understanding and skill set applicable to a growth mindset around global issues, sustainability and self-understanding, within a global context.
As a whole school, students have the opportunity to engage in initiatives such as Model United Nations (MUN) and China Thinks Big. MUN involves a conference similar to the United Nations in which students participate as delegates to various UN Committees. Participants research and formulate diplomatic positions based MUN on the actual policies of the countries they represent. In addition to facilitating the opportunity to reflect inter-culturally, this involves researching, public speaking, teamwork, and leadership skills.
Another major initiative at the school is China Thinks Big. This is a social innovation challenge that focuses on research and community implementation. Through comprehensive online learning and rigorous academic research conducted on a topic of interest, participants bring their ideas to reality, and make a consequential community impact through independent projects. Our CTB Club is designed to help students discover academic interests, begin to think about college and career goals that fit well with students' interests, improve college-readiness and find the most suitable university, major and career.
Leadership and voice are strongly encouraged and nurtured at ULink, across the curriculum, and this is evident in Student Union projects, student-led clubs and assemblies, as well as the extra-curricular clubs and projects. The inclusion of Drama lessons across Years 9 and 10 allows students to become more confident with their speaking skills and vocal expressions of ideas and opinions. Additionally, there are a range of activities that students can engage in, including critical thinking competitions and the High School Mathematics Contest in Modelling (HiMCM), which allow students to apply their skills across disciplines, to real-life problems. In 2021, we also have 60 students enrolled in the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
MUN/CHINA THINKS BIG
MUN
"From my personal point of view, MUN is an academic activity to help students explore a broader world vision and help students think deeply about the society we live in. From MUN, I can learn to think about this issue from different angles, the responsibility, and rights of a global citizen. At the same time, as a global citizen, solving problems from a global perspective rather than a personal perspective is the biggest thing I learned in MUN" (Anna, G10)
"The experience (MUN) was fun, as we can present our ideas of international relationships and express our "creative" ideas to during the debate." (Lawrence, G12)
"I participated in the Model United Nations. I think the meaning of global citizenship is to abandon prejudice and build this world together with the people of other worlds. During MUN, I realised that the United States has its strengths and weaknesses, so the best solution is to unite and cooperate. I think that real globalization is still far away, and there are still many levels of consciousness that need to be reached together." (Ryan, G10 )
"Through studying international courses and investigating for different country positions in MUN activities, I gradually figured out the meaning of global citizenship to me: the ability to realise, comprehend, and empathise with people from far outside the community we live in. From the cosmopolitan perception, though people seem to be grouped into cliques, we are all facing the same issues, like global warming, and all those diverse cultures in the world fuse to form our magnificent human civilisation. Every individual in the world assembles to form an indivisible whole." (Claire, G10)
CHINA THINKS BIG
"China Thinks Big is a global comprehensive competition for young students to solve the problems that exist in society and to help people in need. As far as I am concerned, China Thinks Big provides me with the opportunity to think globally as a global citizen; and act locally as a high school student, a Cantonese, a Chinese person. Although the strength of one person is small and weak, when the strength is gathered together, it can tremendously change the world. Everyone is a tiny reflection of the whole. As an individual, we should understand our responsibility to the world, understand that small actions can change the world. Don't do it just because it's a minor bad thing; don't ignore it just because it's a minor good thing. The CTB motto is for everyone: Although the world is big, we are not small. To change, to create, to influence, let the world hear your voice."(Rosekey, G10).
"Last year, we wanted to understand the factors of game top-up addiction among teenagers and how to better control excessive game top-up behavior. China Thinks Big provides us with an opportunity to contribute to the society from the perspective of a high school student. In a few months let me realise that the world is big, but we are not small. We can't control the whole society, the whole country, but we can change it from small things. Small things add up and can have a big impact. I think the most impressive thing is probably the field survey. We randomly interviewed teenagers on the street. It was hard, and it took a lot of beating. We were actually pretty frustrated."(Giselle, G10)
