Throughout their education at ULink, students are encouraged to form values and attitudes towards various issues linked to inter-cultural awareness and sustainability. PSHE classes, held fortnightly, allow students to reflect on themselves as global citizens, with topics ranging from identity, health, equality and responsibility. Students have the opportunity to reflect on these topics, as well as to discuss and engage in activities that broaden their perspectives and encourage critical thinking.


Across other areas of the curriculum, students also make links to areas of interest and global concern. Through IGCSE Art projects, for example, students have the opportunity to express values and attitudes towards certain topics related to their world and to global citizenship. In Component 2, students can choose a theme to express their values and attitudes and they are encouraged to convey a message through their work as much as possible. Here are some examples, of values and attitudes linked to global citizenship, expressed through the artwork of our students:

Jimmy, 2019-2020.


Jimmy's theme is "ignoring." It mainly expresses the environmental problems ignored by people. In Picture 1, he drew some scenes that he observed around him, that were ignored by people. In Picture 2, he wanted to express the environmental problems caused by people's neglect, in a surreal way, by learning the styles of artists. Picture 3 is his plan for his final piece, when he finally decided to focus his theme on the three elements of piled plastic cans, fire and fire hydrants. Picture 4 is the final piece, which expresses that the accumulation of plastic waste neglected by people is easy to lead to fire, and that the fire hydrant loses its fire-fighting function in case of fire, due to its long disrepair.

"The topic I choose is 'ignore.' The reason I chose it is because I do care about the environment, and the word 'ignore' really shows my thinking. In my opinion, to 'ignore' is a kind of decision. It is when a person can do something, but chooses to do nothing. In my painting, the plastic bottles appear the most because these are the things that people would often ignore, but they appear everywhere in our daily lives. Also, the harmful effects of plastic bottles to the environment is significant. I hope, by these paintings, that I can raise awareness about protecting the environment." (Jimmy, G12)
Anne, 2019-2020.


Anne's theme is 'Treasure Waste.' In the first picture, she observed the waste phenomenon of people around her. Some people live on wasted food and water. Picture 2 shows what she learned about an artist who creates art works and products with recycled materials. Picture 3 shows her planning her final piece; Picture 4 is the final piece, which expresses the two ongoing states of 'wasting' and 'receiving.' In fact, it is a form of satire on people's waste of resources.

"To be honest, I didn't realise that I behave like a global citizen when I created this artwork, but in the process of reviewing it, I noticed that the sensitivity of the surroundings and the awareness of what is happening or deteriorating worldwide, which links to my personal awareness of global citizenship. In my case, quality is a deep concern about resource waste. Wasteful practices are occurring every second nowadays, since people fall into habits, instead of creating awareness. Thanks to my research into 'ugly food,' which is a tiny part of total waste, I was able to glance at the grim fact from the precise data in my project and began to consciously look to relative things through my artwork. From my perspective, sustainable development is crucial, and people should not extravagantly request inexhaustible resources to meet their desires. That is what led me to represent the waste and to satirise these behaviours in my work." (Anne, G12)
Leo, 2019-2020.


Leo's theme is 'Garbage.' In Picture 1, he drew the scene of a collection of garbage observed around him, which is more about the plastic bottles that are sorted and recycled. In Picture 2, he added interest to the rigid picture by learning the artist's composition style. He also used real plastic garbage bags. Picture 3 shows his plan for the final piece in terms of composition, texture and materials. Picture 4 is the final piece- it is not only treasures that deserve to be valued, but about how "garbage" should also be taken seriously.
